Udawalawe National Park

Udawalawe is one of Sri Lanka's finest wildlife destinations, established in 1972 to protect the catchment of the Udawalawe reservoir. The park spans over 30,000 hectares of open grassland, scrub forest, and waterways that support a remarkable concentration of wild elephants — making it arguably the best place in Asia for consistent, close-range elephant sightings.

Beyond elephants, the park rewards patient visitors with water buffalo grazing at the reservoir's edge, spotted deer threading through golden grass, and over 175 species of birds wheeling above the treetops. This is Sri Lanka's dry zone at its most untamed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before you book. Still have a question? WhatsApp us anytime.

Udawalawe is excellent year-round, which makes it unique among Sri Lanka's parks. Morning safaris (6:00–10:00 AM) offer cooler temperatures, active wildlife, and the best light for photography. Afternoon safaris (2:30–6:00 PM) deliver beautiful sunset sightings as elephants gather near the reservoir. The dry months of May through September are particularly spectacular for elephant congregation sightings around water sources.
Our standard safaris run approximately 4 hours inside the park — either a morning slot (6:00–10:00 AM) or an afternoon slot (2:30–6:00 PM). Full-day safaris cover both sessions for the most comprehensive wildlife experience. If you're coming from the south coast, add 1.5–2 hours each way for travel, making it a full and rewarding day trip.
While no wildlife can ever be 100% guaranteed (they are wild animals, after all!), Udawalawe has one of the highest and most consistent elephant sighting rates of any park in Asia. With a resident population of over 200 elephants in an open-grassland habitat, most safaris encounter multiple elephant herds. In our experience, the chances of not seeing elephants at Udawalawe are extremely low.
Absolutely — Udawalawe is one of Sri Lanka's most family-friendly national parks. The open terrain means children can see wildlife easily from the jeep, and elephants are naturally exciting for young visitors. We recommend afternoon safaris for families with smaller children as the timing is more flexible. We provide private family jeeps with extra space and adapt the pace to suit your group.
Yes — we offer hotel pickup from all major south-coast destinations including Mirissa, Weligama, Midigama, Hiriketiya, Galle, Unawatuna, Tangalle, and beyond. We can also collect guests from Colombo, the airport, and Ella. The pickup surcharge depends on your location and is always quoted transparently before booking.
Park entrance ticket costs depend on your nationality and the current government fee schedule. We always clarify exactly what is and isn't included in your quoted price so there are no surprises at the gate. Foreign visitor tickets currently start from approximately USD 30–35 per adult. We handle all ticket purchasing at the park so you don't need to worry about the paperwork.
Yes, and we strongly recommend it. A private jeep means the vehicle is exclusively yours — you set the pace, stop as long as you like at sightings, and enjoy a much more personal experience. Private jeeps are available as standard 4×4s, family-size jeeps, and group vehicles. Just mention your preference in the booking form.
We typically ask for a small advance deposit to confirm your booking, with the balance payable on the day of your safari. Payment can be made by bank transfer or in person. We'll confirm all payment details with you by email or WhatsApp after your inquiry is received.
Light rain often makes wildlife more active and photographs more dramatic. Our open-top jeeps come with a roll-out cover for heavy downpours. Udawalawe's dry-zone climate means heavy, prolonged rain is rare. In the unlikely event that severe weather makes the safari unsafe or the park closes, we will reschedule or discuss a refund option — we always put your experience first.
Yes! The Elephant Transit Home (run by the Wildlife Department) is located just outside the park and offers an unforgettable experience watching orphaned elephant calves being fed. Visits are timed around feeding sessions (usually 9:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 3:00 PM, and 6:00 PM). We can incorporate a visit into your day — just mention it in your booking inquiry.
This is one of our most popular combined services. We pick you up from the south coast, conduct the morning safari, and then continue north through the beautiful tea country to drop you in Ella. It's a logical and scenic route between two of Sri Lanka's biggest highlights. Just select "Safari + Drop to Ella" in the booking form.
Light, comfortable clothing in neutral colours (khaki, olive, beige) works well and blends naturally into the environment. Avoid bright white or neon colours. Bring a hat for sun protection and a light jacket for early morning safaris when temperatures can be surprisingly cool. Closed shoes or trainers are more comfortable than sandals in the open jeep.
